sakura

this is an oil painting.

I painted it 2 years ago as I remember.
I desplayed it in art club exhibition
during school festival.

When I was in highschool, I took an art class.
It was just like a selection course
I had some other choices sush as music or
calligraphy class but I chose art.

In the class I learned basic skill of oil painting.
though it wasn't so professional class
but I was glad that at leastI could have a chance to know
how to paint a drawing with oil.

The model of this picture is my dog in my parents house.
her name is sakura.

Sakura means cherry blossom in Japanese.
we named her sakura because we started to keep her
in the season of cherry blossom and
she was found under the cherry blossom tree
after being left by previous owner.

At fist
she was crying quite sadly all the time when she saw a wagon.
and we guess maybe the previous owner had a wagon car
even he could use it in the day when he left sakura.

It seems she was still waiting her owner to pick her
up again and live together with her.

But the owner never show up.

and now she became an "orphan" dog.
If nobody take her home she supposed to send
to the center waiting to be killed.

then my family decided to welcome her
as a member of my family.

Now she is fawning on us.

I always wonder if she got a human language,
what wold she speak to us.

"take me more often for a walk"
"give me sweets more"(she likes sweets like young girls)
"play with me more"

she is noughty.
I hope it is not true that
a dog will be similar to its owner....;)

Fill the broken heart with burgers

we made this short movie to promote
a kind of student internship abroad.

The message of this movie was

"Go to internship abroad,
anything can be
motivation for it"

it is obviously a kind of comedy.ha!

A boy in this movie eats burgers or frenchfries
as if there were no tomorrow after breaking up
with his girl friend because of stupid quarrel.

there is no lines here
but the lyric of music which is used in the movie
show the feeling of characters.
unfortunately, it is Japanese....!mmmm....

In the last scene
a boy in this movie found
a message in wrapping paper of a burger......

"why don't you go to internship?"

and he starts to think to do
something new instead of doing meaningless thing
like overeating.

this time it was an internship for him.

Any challenges will give you
something new, right?hehe.

human face

sometimes it is easier to draw face of people who have
uneaven feature on face.

That's why the statue used as a model of drawing
is offten someone who looks from someone from the west.

when I was traveled in Europe
I thought that basically Europe has something
uneven everywhere. Artitechture, hua lot of sculptures,
carving, and human face;) even intonation of language!

It is likely common sense that Japanese has
flat intonation which sounds reading sutra!?

Cartoon Picture

An art class teacher toought us that
we can never use cartoon pictures as a model of drawing
when I was in high school.

It is because that most parts which catroon characters have
is far from reality.

Typical example is
the proportion of the eye
in a face.

it is too big, isn't it?
impossible.

big eyes are a kind of symbol as a pretty girl and
in the cortoon world there are numbers of that kind of girls,
even boys.

But,
here I introduce to you Inoue Takehiko
he is one of the most famous writer in Japan.

No one can forget how interesting
his cartton is.
"SLUM DUNK" is definitely his masterpiece
Next to SLUM DUNK he began to be famous.

He is a writer who draws pictures
unlike any other cartoon whiters.

His cartoon picture was drawn based on
reality. There is no too big eyes or
too long legs.

Of courase he draws funny picture which is totally
far from reality in his works
but he does it only when he tries to make a fun
during a story.

SLUM DUNK was a story of guys playing the Basketball
in high school.

in the train

Today I visited the main office of NEC.
In this area we can find businessmans a lot
unlike around the area of my university.

Last year in this season
I started to do job hunting.
At first I tried to apply the company
which is connected to the space.

JAXA, which is "Japanese NASA" but it is not
belong to a nation in Japan.

ha! but it was extremely high level
for a person who know nothing about technical
terms like me.
then I just dreamed to work there.

I also tried to apply the company which produces
fasteners for the wear of astronaut(the fastner never let air in the suit!) .
A campany selling a satellite was interesting for me as well.

Lewis Carroll

This is a portrait of Lewis Carroll.
I'm sure everyone knows at least one of his works.

Alice's Adventures in Wonderland(1865).

Again, I draw this portrait during a class as a student
who looks studying hard cause I was concentrating on writing
"something"!!
It seems I have a class for drawing picture at third period every Monday.

What I like is a professor of the class is not mobile!!
So he never check what I am doing in his class.
I hope I look like a serious student who are concentrating to take note
for him just like a"serious dog" which I posted last time;) ha!!

But as you can see, I wrote down what I thought important as well
for final exam of the class beside drawing.
The professor told us important things again and again in different ways
next to his plenty of knowledge for expressions or phrases
but actually he says one same thing repeatedly for me.

I wish he wouldn't give us a vocabulary test....!

anyway!

Let me talk about
Alice's Adventures in Wonderland
a little.

It is thought a first pure fantasy book in modern juvenile book.
It is written for children just for fun simply
without any instructive story.

Once poeple thought children is helpless and imperfect so that
adults have to save their soul with education.
Children were seemed to be just like minitures of adults.

as a result there were only two types of adults which are strong
ones and weak ones, children.

that was an spreaded idea for kids.

Regardless of the idea,
Some people started to have another concept.

Philosopher John Locke, who saw sprits of children as
a white canvas, said that we should give a book
which was enjoyable for kids and also suitable for thier
capacity in his book"Some thoughts concerning education"(1693)

that is the begining of "The Discovery of Childhood".

The number of followers of John's idea increased gradually
and children could begin to have a choice for books,
which tell them moral story or purely give a fun.
Finally children got proper position in society as a human
who is spontenious and have a personality.

Then a book like Alices's Adventures in Wonderland published.
It was a first book totally free from something which aimed to educate children and
exactly fantasy.

That's why Alice's Adventures in Wondarland
is thought as a remarkable work in juvnile books
of modern literature.

A serious dog

haha, he(she?) is more serious than me!
never sleep in the class!
What I motivate to draw something is
how much I can be interested in the object.
In this drawing,
I didn't care about details.
and I got to know perhaps
there is some special technique to express
hairy part of animal cause it is difficult to
draw it only with pencil.
With a pencil a point can be round quickly as you use
but to express hairy part
I'm sure we should keep sharp pointed pen all the time.
it can give detailed expression of a thin hair.

Digital picture books

I happened to know digital picture books today.

What is digital picture book?
It is literally digital picture book which you can read
on the internet.

what you have to do is only click a page with a mouse
instead of tuening over pages by your hand.

check it and see what digital picture books exactly is
from here if you want.
http://contents.kids.yahoo.co.jp/picturebooks/story/bookshelf/index.html

Unfortunetaly it is written in Japanese
but I'm sure you have no difficulity to find where you should click
to see digital picturebook once you open the link.

and the interesting point about this digital book is
that the story is fixed by a vote.

I couldn't find enough information about it but
perhaps it is like "picture book wikipedia"
which you can change how the story is going on
in picture books.

Moreover if the picture book
turn to be a digital one, some good point will come up.

For example,
Children can read picture books seeing the pictures moving.
yes, it is animation.
Characters in pictue books may twincle their eyes or drop tears
in the display of computer.
even you can hear music with reading.
that is what we couldn't make in papaer picture books.

It seems children or the parents now have plenty of
choices for good picture books.

And also for authours of picture books,
they had wider place to show their works
not only papar books in the book stores,
but also digital ones online.

anyway,
I felt now new generation is really
different from my generation when I take only a
part of current picture book situation.

I never read a picture book online!
mine was always in the shelf near the bed
and my mother told me a story before sleeping!

oh, future situation about reading a book for kids
will be like this?

”mam, can read a picture book?”
→①”Of couse, just wait in front of the computer, i'll come to you soon”
→②”you can hear narrarition without mam”

??

second one shouldn't be happened I think.

first one....
Do we have to put the laptop next to the bed insted of a book shelf??

I guess even if the style of picturebook changes,
the nature of picture book won't be change.

This is a second trial to draw only with my imagination.

It seems that I like to draw something sleepy thesedays.
Recently, I aimed to know how to draw fabrics.

I don't think I completely understand how to draw it
but I partly knew how I can develop more a skill to draw it.

and what I have to do is changing the aim.
as far as I know, I 'm terrible to draw whole body of human
without any model picture.

If a face turn to a direction,
where arms should be? how about right arm
and left arm?

and If the right arm attach to a body in certain place,
how about the five fingers of the right arm?

if a hand grips something,
how the fingers look like?
and from where I suppose to watch it?

nnn.....long way to be a good drawer(again;))....!
Once I started to practice drawing,
I got to know how difficult it is more than before.

How long does it take to see a picture book in which both a story
and pictures are all made by me......!!
uuuu.....!!

Good luck miki!!
No time for complaining!
keep smailing and enjoy my work!

What is a good painter?

The important thing is
how people feel when they see a picture.

It doesn't matter whether
a painter has good skill of drawing or not.

Sometimes children,
who know nothing about how to draw pictures,
draw really good one.

Good skill? So what?

There is something more than any skills.
This something may not be able to be explained
and analyzed totally.

Of course it doen't mean I can be lazy to
practice drawing.......ha!

This is a first trial to draw something without any model picture.

here, now I notice that
I see unnatural aorond the second layer of the dress.
it should be waving along to how the first layser waves.

long way to be a master of drawing!!;))

2007年11月19日月曜日

young adult

It took around 30-40 minuites to draw this picrture.
Again I was drawing during a lesson...
of course no problem about writing down what a teacher said...........;)))))maybe!

Recently I feel that it became easier to see the difference
between shadow and lighted parts in fabric.

In the picture, you can't see what the inside of a cloth is
but in fact there should be arms or body.

Then if the marterial of fabric is soft,
the shapes of human body can be recognised easily.
And in fabric the way of waving will be change along to it.

here, the cloth which a boy wears
doesn't look like so soft material, rather the size seems to be
too big for him.

I tried to draw a picture imaging his body is inside of the cloth.
it was helpfull for me at least to think about that
that is a fabric which is worn by a boy, not just faric.

I think it is important to think like this
this kind of idea will be effective to draw better pictures
even if it look no direct connection to drawing pictures better.

It turned to be something for small kids.

Recently I'm thinking about making a
story for children.

I found a oppotunity to applay my work.

The deadline will be January.

I have enough time to preapare for submit it.

It'll be first trial.

For me the important thing will be to know how to
build a story or how I can feel while creating it.

When I make a story,

It'll be good to try to imagine
being a mother who read a picture book
for her kids before they go to bed.
as everyone has this kinds of experience in childhood.

and I think it will be nice as well
if the story I make can be a present
for my future children.

Fabric

Recently my concern is how to draw fablic.
I see a improvement more or less
from my previous posting.
(a girl sitting on the floor)

but still some part is too dark.
it is important to give a strong contrast that
would be a base of width for expression.
but only innatural way, the contrast can be
looked effective.

and even here,
the fablic seems to be hard material especially
if you look around the right under part of fabric.

In fact this fabric is a kind of bed sheets which shouldn't
be so hard if it's not too starched!
In future I really want to draw what i want
without seeing any sample or model.
Now still I highly need to see real object.
Oneday I will make it.
when?!

Colorful face

Nobody may recognize a model of this pciture.

She is a hot actress .

but actually for me, i don't care she is hot or not.

i felt good if i met a picture which i feel like to copy

or draw it. and I was simply enjoying color it

without thinking.

there is no intention in this picture. I didn't think how

the shadow or where the lighted parts are in the face.

no thinking, no theory, no reality.

"Draw what I want, Paint as I like".

it was a phrase if there was only thing

I was thinking during working on this picture,

as far as I remember.

I draw this picture during a class today
cause the lesson was boring.....

I copy this picture from a textbook
writing note on the blackboad.

What I knew was a difficulity to draw the difference
between two colors when i can use only black color.

then ihad to know the tone of the color.
here, you can't see the diffrence.
Actually i wanted to distinguish two colors
which are white and dark pink in colorful version
of this picture.

and still i see the unnatural in the girls cloth.
How it waves.

there is only ONE solution here.

Alan Greenspan

I 've heard the name of " Alan Greenspan" when I took
the course of bussiness interpreter in first semester.
Teacher of the course told us "Greenspan is a name which is worth to rememer"

And today I knew the news that a teacher of my translation class
will publish a book about Greenspan.
The original version is of course written by Greenspan himself in English.
so my teacher Mr. Yamaoka translated it into Japanese.

He informed it at the end of class.
and also he added that the book he translated haven't been found in any
book store yet. he just brought a sample of the book in the class.

I felt like trying to read it because
I am simply interested in the contents of the book and
my teacher who are tolerant enough to allow my delayed assignment.....
no, no, ...who is in the top of the field of translation about Economics.

After the class I handed in my assignment abd talked to the teacher
that when we can get the book in the book store.
then, I didn't expect it,
he suggested me to take and read the sample he brought.
now to my surprise I will be almost the first reader of unpublished book.

The title of book is haran no jidai in Japanese.
I'm worry about my knowledge of Economics to read the book.
Too much technical terms can easily make me get tired of reading!
but anyway the book looks like biography. it won't so difficult,i hope.

Setting of stories

How a story shold be began?
it is obvious that dramatical setting attracts people.

Dramatical settings mean something
that rarely happens in reality.

One good example is "arashi no yoruni"
which was one of the most famous picture books
recently written by a Japanese writer.
Now the book is not only picture book
but also made into a movie, even now
into the drama.

The theme of "arashi no yoru ni" is
How a wolf and a goat can be good friends.

Basically it is impossible to built friendship
between them.

For wloves goats are only thier foods to make them full.

Nobody thinks that a wolf and a goat can be friends
when knowing the story setting in the first page of a book.
But actually on the other hand
you must also be curious for the destination
the story would reach finally.

Then you can't help stopping the hand
turning over pages until you finish the book.

In this kind of dramatic setting,
Readers can see clearly the position from which
they start to read the book.

And what all readers have to think is
how a wolf and a goat can overcome the difficulity.
Now readers are in the situation that they know
what they have to do but at the same time
they don't know what they can do.

now, the role of auther is leading
the readers to the answer with beautiful story.

They've already been ready to fallow the author.
Therefore the story will be easily accepted to them.
It means the author have chaptured hearts of readers.

"arashi no yoruni" in which
The two in quite oppesite side are creating the story.

It is useful to describe their uniquness having
tatally different figure with each other.

I was looking for something is useful to creat a picture book.
cause in fact i didn't know specific information about publishing
books!

then when i getting to know that,
i found actually the important thing is not there.
yes, it is important but not the first step.

i happen to find a phrase from
an famous picture book writer.

Here is translation of his words.

"I think my picture books are like a window or
I hope they are the exixtance like a window.

Once you open a cover, you can see a small world
from my picture book made by me.

And i wish you watched the scene
from the window named books as slow as you can.

And I would like to show you the scene moving
one after another to make you feel like being on
a locomotive which is running at speed that enable
you to pick stories around my small world.

I hope my works can be books which readers
feel to see the scene from the locomotive again
Even if they colse the book.""

Translation

The way to translate somthing should be fixed
depending on which kind of works you'll translate.

If you work on translation of essay, the tranlation you made
should be essay. not like articles or report etc.

when you translate fiction,
you should make fiction even
in the language you use for the translation.

The important thing in making fiction
that how you make a world which can keep attracting readers.

then, you should decide at first
who will be readers for the fiction.

Even you should think about the characters in the fiction.
each characters talk with other characters.
(if it's fantasy ficiton, the character can be also animals or inorganic matters, etc)

So a writer of fiction should consider both readers and characters.

and if you try to tranlate fictions,
you may think of the people who are using the language
which you will use for the translation as well.

I mean, it will be different translation depending on
which country the readers are from.

As aresult,
To translate fiction,
you should think about these 3 points.

1 Readers who will read the translation.
2 Characters which play roles in the fiction.
3 Countries in which the translated fictions are read.

Pavilion

This blog will be also a place to show my drawing or painting.........

let's begin.

what is literature?

"literature is only stains of ink on simple papers."

that was the words from a professor in university.
i was shocked.
yes,
it was totally correct.

but imagine if you can give something for someone who you don't know,
even you haven't met, only with such a simple resource.
it is magic.

and why there are best seller books in the world?
it also depends on good translations in each countries.
but still i wonder the books which is read by people through the history,
for example.

i'm curious for these facts.
